The United States has delivered a fresh consignment of military equipment to Nigeria as part of its continuing support for the country’s efforts to combat terrorism and violent extremism.
The latest delivery, which was airlifted to Nigeria aboard a United States Air Force C-17 aircraft, forms part of an existing defence cooperation framework between both countries.
The United States Africa Command (AFRICOM), in a statement posted on its verified X account, said the delivery was made to the Nigerian Air Force over the weekend under a foreign military sales agreement between the two countries.
“Partnership In Action: A U.S. Air Force C-17 delivers equipment to the Nigerian Air Force this weekend,” AFRICOM said.
According to the command, the equipment forms part of the broader US-Nigeria security partnership and is expected to support Nigeria’s efforts to counter terrorism across the region.
However, AFRICOM did not disclose the type, quantity or specific operational purpose of the equipment delivered.
There was also no immediate confirmation from the Defence Headquarters or any of the three services of the Nigerian Armed Forces regarding the receipt of the consignment.
The Director of Defence Information, Major General Samaila Uba, also declined to comment when contacted on the development.
The latest delivery comes against the backdrop of renewed security cooperation between Nigeria and the United States, with both countries maintaining collaboration in areas including intelligence sharing, military training, technical assistance and counterterrorism operations.
Major General Uba had earlier described the Nigeria-US security relationship as strong, enduring and mutually beneficial, dismissing suggestions that the reported withdrawal of some US personnel from Nigeria represented a breakdown in bilateral security cooperation.
He said the partnership was designed to strengthen Nigeria’s military capabilities through intelligence sharing, training, technical support and other forms of professional military cooperation.
The cooperation has, over the years, included the supply of military equipment and platforms, capacity-building, intelligence support and assistance in countering terrorist organisations operating in Nigeria and the wider region.
One of the most significant examples was the delivery of A-29 Super Tucano aircraft to the Nigerian Air Force, which has strengthened the service’s air capabilities in counterterrorism and counterinsurgency operations.
The latest consignment further underscores the continuing military relationship between Abuja and Washington as Nigeria intensifies efforts to degrade terrorist and insurgent networks threatening national and regional security.
