In a significant political development, the head of Nigeria’s Intelligence Agency (NIA) has resigned from his position amid escalating public demand for better governance and transparency.
Director General of the NIA, Ahmed Abubakar, is said to have submitted his resignation letter to President Tinubu on Saturday, according to the Nigerian Television Authority.
As of the time of filing this report, the reason for his resignation is not yet known, Heritage Times HT reports.
This is as the Presidency has yet to issue an official statement on the development.
The resignation of the NIA chief comes amid widespread criticism from citizens and political analysts over the agency’s performance and management.
Heritage Times HT reports that the NIA, which plays a crucial role in the nation’s security and intelligence operations, has been under scrutiny for failing to effectively address national security challenges.
This resignation underscores the ongoing discourse on governance in Nigeria, highlighting the urgent need for leadership that is responsive to the demands of its citizens.
Abubakar was first appointed the Director-General of the agency by former President Muhammadu Buhari in 2018, a tenure that was renewed in 2021.
