Who Succeeds King Oyo? Uganda’s Royal Family Divided Over Tooro Throne

Uganda’s ancient Tooro Kingdom has been plunged into a bitter succession dispute following the death and burial of King Oyo Nyimba Kabamba Iguru Rukidi IV, with members of the royal family and the kingdom’s traditional elders divided over who should inherit the throne.

King Oyo, who became the world’s youngest reigning monarch after ascending the Tooro throne at the age of three in 1995, died on August 27 at the age of 34 while receiving cancer treatment in the United States.

He was buried on Saturday at the Karambi Royal Tombs in Fort Portal, western Uganda, following nine days of mourning attended by thousands of mourners and dignitaries.

But even as the kingdom mourned the monarch who had ruled for more than three decades, a fierce contest over his successor was already unfolding within the royal family.

The royal clan’s succession committee selected Edward Rukidi Kijanangoma, a cousin of the late king and a news anchor and editor with Uganda Broadcasting Corporation, as the next monarch.

Kijanangoma, 56, subsequently assumed the throne in a traditional ceremony following the burial of King Oyo, formally marking the transfer of the kingship.

The development, however, has been fiercely contested by members of Oyo’s immediate family, who insist that the late monarch left behind a biological son who should inherit the throne.

Oyo never married publicly and had no known children during his lifetime until shortly before his death, when the kingdom’s prime minister disclosed that he had a son.

The family has argued that Oyo’s will provided for his biological son to succeed him, while supporters of Kijanangoma’s selection have questioned the existence and status of the alleged heir.

The dispute intensified after Princess Ruth Komuntale, Oyo’s sister, criticised the decision to name Kijanangoma, describing it as an attempt to create division within the royal family.

Queen Mother Best Kemigisa also appealed for restraint, urging those involved in the succession contest to allow the family and the kingdom to properly mourn the late monarch before turning to the battle over the throne.

The controversy has placed Tooro’s traditional leadership at a delicate crossroads, with questions surrounding the alleged heir and the authority of the royal clan in determining succession.

The Archbishop of the Church of Uganda, Stephen Kazimba Mugalu, also appealed for unity during the funeral, warning that words spoken in grief could deepen divisions and damage King Oyo’s legacy.

Although Uganda is a constitutional republic where executive power rests with elected authorities, the country retains several traditional kingdoms that existed before colonial rule. Their monarchs wield no formal political authority but remain influential symbols of culture, history and identity.

King Oyo’s own reign began under extraordinary circumstances. Following the death of his father, he was crowned in 1995 at just three years old, becoming an international sensation as the world’s youngest monarch.

Over the years, he grew from the widely photographed “boy king” into an influential traditional leader who represented Tooro at national and international events.

He also served as a United Nations goodwill ambassador in the campaign against HIV/AIDS and maintained relationships with prominent international figures, including former Libyan leader Muammar Gaddafi.

The succession controversy is particularly significant because the Tooro throne comes with not only immense cultural importance but also control of a substantial royal estate, including large areas of land and financial allocations from the Ugandan government.

For now, Kijanangoma has emerged as the new king, but questions surrounding the alleged biological son of King Oyo could continue to generate legal and traditional challenges.

The dispute leaves the Tooro Kingdom facing a difficult test: whether the decision of the royal clan will prevail or whether the late king’s alleged heir will eventually be recognised as the rightful successor to a throne that Oyo occupied for more than 30 years.
