President Muhammadu Buhari will inaugurate the Dangote Petroleum Refinery & Petrochemicals today, marking a momentous occasion that will revolutionize Nigeria’s oil and gas sector.
The refinery, spearheaded by Africa’s wealthiest individual, Aliko Dangote, is a remarkable feat as it is the world’s largest single-train refinery.
Situated on a sprawling 2,635-hectare expanse within Dangote Industries Free Zone in Ibeju-Lekki, Lagos, the refinery boasts an impressive processing capacity of 650,000 barrels per day (bpd).
Notably, this monumental project will generate employment opportunities for over 100,000 individuals, while also propelling Nigeria to shed its dependence on petroleum product imports.
Joining President Buhari at this historic event are esteemed counterparts from Ghana, Togo, Senegal, Niger, and Chad.
In attendance will be President Gnassingbé Eyadéma of Togo, President Nana Akufo-Addo of Ghana, President Macky Sall of Senegal, President Mohamed Bazoum of Niger Republic, and President Mahamat Déby of Chad.
Also, several ambassadors and international dignitaries will grace the occasion, with President Paul Kagame of Rwanda delivering his goodwill message virtually.
The ceremony has garnered tremendous anticipation, attracting the presence of all 36 state governors, governors-elect, ministers, senators, and prominent industry leaders from within and beyond Nigeria’s borders.
Global oil traders, top international bankers, and representatives from international multilateral agencies are also eager participants, emphasizing the significance of this occasion.
The presence of Nigeria’s President-Elect, Bola Ahmed Tinubu, adds further significance to the commissioning of the Dangote Petroleum Refinery, as the former governor of Lagos, Tinubu initiated the establishment of the Free Trade Zone in Ibeju-Lekki, where the refinery proudly stands today.
The commissioning holds unparalleled significance as it signifies the first instance where an individual’s ambitious vision has materialized into a refinery of such magnitude.
The Dangote Petroleum Refinery is poised to meet the energy demands of Nigerian consumers and neighboring countries, while also fostering the exportation of refined petroleum products beyond the African continent.
This pivotal development aligns harmoniously with the goals of the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA), benefiting over 50 countries within the trade bloc, which heavily rely on imported refined petroleum products.
According to the project’s facts sheet, “the construction of the Dangote Petroleum Refinery has been a remarkable engineering feat, characterized by state-of-the-art technology and adherence to stringent emission and effluent norms.
“The facility has been meticulously designed to process a wide range of crude oils, including African Crudes, select Middle Eastern Crudes, and US Light Tight Oil”
The project’s facts sheet further reveals the extent of Dangote’s commitment to excellence.
“Notably, 65 million cubic meters of sand were meticulously dredged, amounting to an investment of approximately 300 million euros.
“The colossal undertaking utilized the world’s largest dredgers, second-largest dredgers, and tenth-largest dredgers to elevate the height of the refinery by 1.5 meters, ensuring resilience against potential sea-level rise due to global warming.
“Furthermore, over 1,209 units of various equipment were procured to bolster local capacity for site works.
“To fortify equipment installation capabilities, 332 cranes were strategically employed.
“Also, Dangote Industries established the world’s largest granite quarry, facilitating the production of coarse aggregates, stone column materials, stone bases, stone dust, and material for breakwaters, boasting an annual production capacity of 10 million tonnes.
“To augment logistics, a purpose-built port was developed, complete with two quays designed to withstand a load bearing capacity of 25 tonnes per square.”
