The Federal Government of Nigeria and organized Labour have agreed on ₦70,000 as the new National Minimum Wage.
This agreement was reached during the latest meeting between President Bola Tinubu and the leadership of organized Labour, held at the Presidential Villa in Abuja.
Briefing State House correspondents on the agreement, Minister of Information Mohammed Idris stated that the President emphasized the government’s commitment to making significant investments in facilities to improve the lives of Nigerian workers.
President Tinubu met with the Labour leadership to resolve ongoing issues surrounding the National Minimum Wage. He convened with them on July 10 after the tripartite committee he established failed to persuade Labour to accept the government’s initial offer.
Initially, the government had approved ₦62,000 as the National Minimum Wage, which Labour rejected, insisting on ₦250,000. President Tinubu repeatedly argued that the proposal was unrealistic given the country’s current economic situation. However, Labour consistently maintained that the ₦62,000 proposed by the government was insufficient, citing the unpredictable waves of inflation.
