In commemorating the 2024 International Human Rights Day 2024, the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has disclosed that it received a staggering 2 million human rights violation complaints across Nigeria this year alone.
The Executive Secretary of the NHRC, Tony Ojukwu, revealed this during a Human Rights Walk in Abuja, organised in collaboration with the Rule of Law and Anti-Corruption (RoLAC) programme, funded by the European Union and implemented by the International Institute for Democracy and Electoral Assistance (International IDEA).
Participants in the walk carried placards with messages promoting equality and justice, including “Human Rights Are Universal Rights – Let’s Protect Them” and “Break the Chains of Inequality – Advance Human Rights.”
Ojukwu highlighted that the high number of complaints indicates increased awareness among Nigerians about their rights and their willingness to report violations. “Reaching the 2 million mark shows that Nigeria has come of age in human rights awareness,” he said, urging citizens to report rights violations to NHRC offices nationwide instead of resorting to self-help.
He also called for improved funding from the government and private organisations to enable the Commission to provide better legal services and address the growing demand for redress.
Appeal for Support
The NHRC leader emphasised the need for private sector involvement in supporting human rights initiatives. “Companies and individuals can contribute in various ways, such as donating equipment, vehicles, or funds. This is a collective responsibility, not just the government’s job,” Ojukwu said, lamenting that the Human Rights Fund has yet to receive donations despite the pressing need for resources.
Focus on Children’s Rights
The Chairperson of the NHRC Governing Council highlighted the importance of protecting children’s rights, especially access to education, as a means to address broader societal challenges like the issue of out-of-school children. “If we prioritise children’s rights, we will solve many of the problems facing our country,” she remarked.
The NHRC’s call for action underscores the urgent need for collective efforts to safeguard human rights and ensure justice for all Nigerians.
