A South African court has summoned the head of the country’s police force, General Fannie Masemola, to appear in connection with a $21 million (£15.5m) health contract that is now under criminal investigation.
Notice to Appear
General Masemola “was served with a notice to appear in court” on 21 April over his alleged role in awarding the contract, according to a police spokesperson.
The tender, awarded in 2024 to controversial businessman Vusimuzi “Cat” Matlala through his company Medicare24 Tshwane District, was meant to provide health services to the police.
Corruption Allegations
Following allegations of corruption, a dozen senior police officers have been formally charged over their involvement in the deal, which has since been cancelled. They are accused of colluding with Matlala, who faces corruption, fraud, and attempted murder charges.
General Masemola, 62, becomes the third national police commissioner to face criminal investigation while in office.
Government Response
President Cyril Ramaphosa has not commented on a possible suspension of the police chief but said he “will be addressing the matter… in accordance with the law.”
Police spokesperson Brig. Athlenda Mathe stated that the national commissioner “has taken note of the charges brought against him and he has pledged his full cooperation with all lawful processes.”
Prosecuting Authority Statement
The National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) confirmed that Masemola was served with the summons on Wednesday morning. NPA spokesperson Kaizer Kganyago said, “We cannot divulge the charges until they are presented to him.”
The allegations over how Matlala secured the contract emerged during a government inquiry into corruption in the police force, established after claims that criminal gangs had infiltrated government operations, leading to the sacking of South Africa’s police minister.
