Zimbabwe has begun circulating a new currency in a bid to tackle its ongoing economic challenges.
The currency, named ZiG, initially debuted digitally in early April but is now being circulated in physical banknotes and coins.
This move represents the latest effort by the southern African nation to address its persistent currency crisis, which has long plagued its economy.
Over the years, Zimbabwe has explored various solutions, from considering gold coins to experimenting with digital currencies, all in an attempt to stabilize its monetary situation.
The ZiG, backed by the country’s gold reserves, was introduced electronically on April 5.
However, signs of scepticism are already emerging, with some government departments hesitating to embrace it, echoing past distrust that has surrounded previous currency initiatives.
Zimbabwe’s monetary history has been marked by turmoil, with the ZiG becoming the sixth currency since the dramatic collapse of the Zimbabwe dollar in 2009 due to hyperinflation reaching a staggering 5 billion percent.
This collapse triggered a series of currency transitions, including the adoption and subsequent banning and unbanning of the U.S. dollar, along with other attempts like the introduction of bond notes, the revival of the Zimbabwe dollar, and the exploration of gold-backed coins and digital currency.
Despite these efforts, stability has remained elusive, with the U.S. dollar maintaining its status as the preferred currency for most Zimbabweans due to its reliability.
As the new ZiG banknotes enter circulation, doubts persist among the populace. Many traders have expressed reluctance, preferring established currencies like the U.S. dollar until the true value of the ZiG becomes clear.
The government’s stance on the ZiG is mixed, with some businesses allowed to continue transactions in U.S. dollars while others are mandated to use the new currency, raising concerns about inconsistency and confusion.
Memories of Zimbabwe’s hyperinflation era loom large, with anecdotes of astronomical prices and currency instability serving as a stark reminder of past economic turmoil.
The enduring value of the U.S. dollar amidst such chaos remains deeply ingrained in the collective memory of Zimbabweans.
Despite government assurances of the ZiG’s reliability backed by gold reserves, scepticism lingers among the populace, fueled by decades of economic upheaval.
President Emmerson Mnangagwa’s administration has taken a tough stance on currency issues, cracking down on black market activities and freezing accounts of businesses reluctant to embrace the new currency.
