Nigeria and Germany have reaffirmed their commitment to deepening bilateral cooperation following a high-level diplomatic engagement between the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Dunoma Umar Ahmed, and the Ambassador of the Federal Republic of Germany to Nigeria, Her Excellency Annett Günther.
The meeting focused on advancing collaboration across multilateral diplomacy, economic partnerships, cultural heritage preservation, and institutional coordination.
The development was contained in a statement issued by the Ministry’s Spokesperson, Kimiebi Ebienfa, who highlighted that the engagement emphasized the growing strategic alignment between both countries and their shared commitment to sustained diplomatic dialogue.
Welcoming the German delegation, Ambassador Dunoma Ahmed reaffirmed Nigeria’s dedication to open and continuous diplomatic engagement with Germany, stressing that Nigeria remains receptive to constructive exchanges and is ready to facilitate discussions on areas of mutual interest.
In her remarks, Ambassador Annett Günther expressed Germany’s appreciation for the strong and evolving bilateral relationship, noting that the successful convening of the Nigeria–Germany Bi-National Commission in November 2025 marked a significant milestone in strengthening cooperation between both nations.
A major aspect of the discussions centred on reciprocal support within multilateral institutions, particularly candidacies to the United Nations Security Council (UNSC). Ambassador Günther referenced the 2024 exchange of notes on mutual backing and commended Nigeria’s principled support for Germany’s candidature. She reiterated Germany’s commitment to multilateralism, global peace, and reforms within the United Nations system, including greater African representation in both permanent and non-permanent Security Council seats.
The German envoy also emphasized Berlin’s alignment with Nigeria’s advocacy for equitable global governance and enhanced African participation in international decision-making processes.
Discussions further explored cooperation in infrastructural development, especially energy transmission. Ambassador Günther reaffirmed Germany’s interest in supporting Nigeria’s efforts to modernize its energy transmission and distribution systems, describing the sector as critical to Nigeria’s economic development. She expressed optimism that ongoing administrative processes would soon be concluded to enable the implementation of key energy projects backed by German investment and technical expertise.
Responding, Ambassador Dunoma Ahmed assured the German envoy that relevant departments within the Ministry would review outstanding documentation and provide necessary clarifications regarding reciprocal arrangements within multilateral frameworks. He also acknowledged Germany’s role in supporting Nigeria’s economic modernization agenda, particularly in energy sector reforms, infrastructure resilience, and sustainable investment initiatives.
Both countries further reaffirmed their commitment to strengthening security cooperation through capacity-building initiatives and collaborative frameworks aimed at promoting regional stability and addressing shared security challenges.
The meeting concluded with both sides restating their dedication to multilateralism, economic cooperation, cultural diplomacy, and institutional coordination, reflecting the growing maturity and strategic depth of Nigeria–Germany relations anchored on mutual respect and shared global responsibilities.
