The global football transfer market has reached a new financial peak, with clubs spending a record $9.89 billion on international transfer fees during the 2026 mid-year transfer window, according to the latest report by FIFA.

The figure represents the highest spending ever recorded for a mid-year transfer window, as more than 12,500 international player transfers were registered across men’s professional football between June 1 and September 2, 2026.

FIFA’s latest International Transfer Snapshot also showed that the 2026 FIFA World Cup played a significant role in driving activity in the transfer market, with 267 players from 47 nationalities who featured at the tournament subsequently changing clubs.

Those World Cup players alone generated more than $3.3 billion in combined transfer fees, accounting for more than one-third of the total expenditure recorded during the window.

The surge represents a further increase from the previous record set in the 2025 mid-year window, when clubs spent approximately $9.76 billion on international transfers. The 2026 figure therefore marks another milestone in the continued expansion of football’s global transfer economy.

English clubs once again dominated the international transfer market, accounting for more than $3.02 billion in spending on players recruited from clubs abroad.

Italy ranked second with about $1.1 billion, followed by Spain with $940 million, Germany with $904 million and France with $641 million.

The figures underline the financial power of the major European leagues, particularly the English market, which has continued to set the pace in international player recruitment.

On the income side, however, French clubs emerged as the biggest beneficiaries, collecting approximately $1.7 billion in transfer fees from players sold to clubs abroad.

English clubs followed with $1.43 billion, while German clubs generated $1.02 billion, ahead of Spain’s $773 million and Portugal’s $642 million.

The figures highlight the increasingly global nature of football’s transfer economy, with clubs not only spending heavily to strengthen their squads but also generating substantial revenues from player sales.

The record-breaking window came shortly after the 2026 FIFA World Cup, which appears to have significantly influenced the movement of players across international clubs.

Performances at football’s biggest global tournament often attract heightened attention from clubs, scouts and supporters, and FIFA’s latest figures indicate that the effect was particularly pronounced this year.

More than 260 players who participated in the World Cup secured moves during the transfer window, with their combined transfers worth more than $3.3 billion.

Among the high-profile moves were Spain midfielder Rodri’s transfer from Manchester City to Barcelona and France winger Bradley Barcola’s switch from Paris Saint-Germain to Liverpool.

Spain’s World Cup triumph in July also helped intensify the spotlight on players who impressed during the tournament, as clubs moved quickly to secure established stars and emerging talents.

Women’s Football Sets New Records

The growth was not confined to men’s football.

Women’s professional football also recorded unprecedented activity, with 1,406 international transfers completed during the window — a 19.2 per cent increase over the previous record.

Transfer fees in the women’s game more than doubled compared with the corresponding 2025 window, reaching a record $28.6 million.

English clubs led spending in women’s football with $8 million, followed by Spain with $6.6 million, Germany with $4.9 million, the United States with $2.9 million and Italy with $2.1 million.

Swedish clubs, meanwhile, received the highest total value in transfer fees at about $4.2 million, narrowly ahead of England’s $4 million. France and Germany each recorded approximately $3.6 million in transfer income, while the Netherlands received $2.9 million.

FIFA said the latest figures demonstrate both the continued expansion of the international transfer market and the growing opportunities created for players following the global exposure provided by major tournaments.

With the men’s market surpassing the $9.89 billion mark and the women’s game recording its own spending and activity records, the latest transfer window has further cemented football’s position as one of the world’s most lucrative sporting industries.
