Somalia’s electoral authorities have unveiled the timetable for the country’s next national elections, scheduling parliamentary elections for April 15, 2027, and the presidential poll for May 15.
The National Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission said the timetable covers elections for both chambers of parliament as well as the presidency, in accordance with Somalia’s Constitution and national electoral legislation.
The announcement comes amid an ongoing political dispute between President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud’s administration and opposition leaders over proposed constitutional amendments, the duration of the presidential mandate and plans to introduce a direct voting system.
Opposition groups have criticised the electoral timetable, arguing that it was established without a broad political agreement involving key stakeholders. They have also boycotted parliamentary proceedings on proposed constitutional amendments, rejecting changes they say cannot provide a legitimate basis for extending the government’s mandate or determining a new election timetable.
President Mohamud, who assumed office in 2022, has defended the constitutional amendments approved by parliament earlier this year. His administration argues that the changes provide a legal framework for an additional year in office and pave the way for the introduction of direct elections.
The electoral commission also released a series of preparatory milestones ahead of the polls. The process is scheduled to begin on November 1 with a 21-day review of regulations governing political parties and candidate registration.
According to the commission, the initial phase will include broad consultations with the public and other stakeholders before the commencement of candidate nominations and election campaigns.
Political parties and relevant stakeholders are expected to submit their parliamentary candidate lists by November 22, approximately four months before the parliamentary elections.
Registration of presidential candidates is scheduled for January 21, 2027. The commission said the date complies with Article 34(1) of the National Electoral Law, which requires presidential candidates to be registered within a 60-day period before the election.
The parliamentary campaign is expected to commence on February 27, 2027, while campaigning for the presidential election will begin on March 15, exactly 30 days before the May 15 presidential vote.
