Jaythan Gilder, convicted of robbery and grand theft after stealing jewellery worth more than $760,000 from a Tiffany & Co. store in Orlando, Florida, United States is scheduled to be sentenced on December 7.
The sentencing follows a jury verdict in a case involving the theft of jewellery from the luxury retailer at the Mall at Millenia in February 2025.
Prosecutors said Gilder posed as a representative negotiating a purchase for an NBA player before grabbing the merchandise and using force against a store employee as he tried to escape.
According to prosecutors, Gilder swallowed the stolen earrings after his arrest in an attempt to conceal evidence. Authorities monitored him for nearly two weeks before recovering the jewellery.
The case drew attention because of the alleged attempt to hide the stolen items and the value of the merchandise involved.
Florida State Attorney Monique Worrell said the incident involved both significant financial losses and risks to store employees.
“This case involved not only a significant financial loss, but also the safety of employees who were confronted with violence while simply doing their jobs,” Worrell said.
Gilder’s sentencing is expected to determine the punishment for the offences. The court has not yet announced what sentence he will receive.
