Nigerians have taken to social media in reaction to a warning issued by the Senate to State House officials on the need to prevent President Muhammadu Buhari from embarking on foreign trips for medical attention.

The warning was issued by senator Danjuma La’ah, Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, Kaduna South-led Senate Committee on Federal Character and Intergovernmental Affairs, when the State House Permanent Secretary, Tijani Umar, appeared before the panel to defend 2021 budget estimates for ‘Aso Rock’.

Delivering his defence of the N19.7bn proposed 2021 budget for the State House, Tijani Umar revealed that N1.3bn is proposed for the State House Clinic.

Reacting to the budget estimates, the Chairman of the Senate panel, Senator Danjuma La’ah explained that though the committee would approve the budget for the State House Clinic, the President and other top officials of his government should no longer be flown abroad for medical treatment.

The committee stressed that rather than allow President Buhari to jet out for foreign medical attention and treatment, the government and state house officials should put the State House Clinic in order for such purposes.

Interestingly, Nigerians are not impressed with the warning which they described as hypocritical.

The citizens who took to microblogging platform Twitter to express their disgust described the warning as mere noise, while some wondered if members of the same senate committee don’t embark on medical tourism.

See their reactions below.

It is worthwhile to note that President Muhammadu Buhari has embarked on medical trips abroad five times ever since he assumed office on May 29, 2015.

The total number of days he has spent on medical trips is 170 days (8.56 percent) of the 1,987 days he has been in power.
