The controversial scheme to deport migrants to Rwanda was the subject of a recent phone conversation between UK Prime Minister, Rishi Sunak, and President Paul Kagame.
Despite opposition to the move, “the leaders remain committed to working together to ensure a successful partnership,” according to a statement from Downing Street.
Opponents of the UK government’s plan to send asylum seekers to Rwanda have argued that the destination is not safe and that the scheme violates human rights laws.
Despite this, a British High Court ruled in December 2022 that the scheme was lawful.
However, no one has been sent there and any plans to do so are currently being held up by legal challenges.
In a move that is sure to spark further controversy, the British government has unveiled plans for a new law on Tuesday.
The law will prevent those who enter the country through unofficial routes from claiming asylum, according to Reuters news agency.
This latest development is likely to reignite the debate over the deportation of migrants and the UK’s asylum policies.
