A former Nigeria’s Super Eagles defender, Mike Onyemachara, has been confirmed dead.
This was disclosed by his younger brother, Ogbonnaya Onyemachara, via a Facebook post on Saturday May 6, 2023.
He wrote, “This is to officially announce the passing of our brother and son, Mike Nkeonye Onyemechara, MON.
“He died yesterday (Friday) evening in his sleep.
“He had complained of weakness and decided to have some sleep and didn’t wake up.
“This is a very devastating moment for the entire family and we wish to be allowed some time to mourn this heavy loss.”
Onyemachara, was a member of the 1989 Nigeria U20 team that won a silver medal in Saudi Arabia.
That was after a dramatic comeback, regarded as ‘Miracle of Daman’ against the then Soviet Union USSR during the tournament.
Onyemechara played for Iwuanyanwu Nationale FC, now known as Heartland FC of Owerri.
