United Nations (UN) Secretary-General, António Guterres, has condemned the recent air strike in Sudan that reportedly killed at least 22 people and injured scores.
The attack, which took place on Saturday, July 8, was carried out by Sudan’s army on a residential area in western Omdurman city.
In a statement released by his spokesperson, Guterres expressed his condolences to the families of the victims and called for an investigation into the incident. He said that the air strike was “a clear violation of international humanitarian law” and that it “must be condemned in the strongest terms.”
Guterres also said that he was “appalled by reports of large-scale violence and casualties across Sudan’s Darfur region.” He said that the situation in Sudan is “dire” and that the international community must “come together to help bring an end to the violence and support the victims of these atrocities.”
The UN has been providing humanitarian assistance to those affected by the conflict in Sudan, but access to the region has been limited due to ongoing fighting. The recent air strike highlights the urgent need for an end to the violence and for all parties to the conflict to engage in dialogue to find a peaceful solution.
Guterres’s condemnation of the air strike is an important step towards raising awareness of the situation in Sudan and encouraging the international community to take action to help those affected by the conflict.
