President Cyril Ramaphosa has expressed confidence in South Africa’s relationship with the United States, despite President Donald Trump’s leadership, reassuring stakeholders at the World Economic Forum (WEF) in Davos, Switzerland, that there were no concerns over the future of bilateral ties.
Speaking to reporters on Wednesday, Ramaphosa recalled his conversation with Trump following his election victory, emphasizing the positive tone of their exchange. “I’m not worried about our relations. I spoke to him soon after he was elected, congratulated him, and we both said we are looking forward to continued dealings and engagements,” Ramaphosa said.
The South African leader’s statement comes at a time of heightened international attention on US foreign policy under the Trump administration, particularly as global political and economic dynamics shift.
His reassurance underscores his confidence that South Africa’s position on the world stage will remain stable despite these changes.
Heritage Times HT reports that South Africa’s role in global leadership is currently amplified, as the country holds the presidency of the G20, a powerful group of major economies.
In Davos, Ramaphosa highlighted the strategic importance of this role, stressing that South Africa was committed to ensuring a smooth transition of leadership. He also underscored that the country would collaborate closely with the United States, which will assume the G20 presidency after South Africa’s tenure.
“We will work together with the US to help prepare for their presidency of the G20,” Ramaphosa explained. This cooperative effort, he suggested, would ensure that both nations could effectively address global challenges ranging from economic recovery to climate change, and forge a path toward continued prosperity.
The G20 presidency represents a significant opportunity for South Africa to influence key global policy discussions, particularly as developing nations look for stronger representation in global economic dialogues.
Previously, Ramaphosa had expressed a desire to focus on inclusive growth, sustainable development, and the importance of multilateral cooperation during South Africa’s leadership of the group.
Despite the uncertainties that may surround Trump’s foreign policies, particularly with regards to Africa, Ramaphosa’s approach emphasizes diplomacy and practical collaboration.
The South African president has often stated that his administration seeks to strengthen partnerships across the globe, focusing on mutual benefits and fostering sustainable, long-term relationships.
As a Pan-Africanist, Ramaphosa’s calm and measured stance signals a commitment to stability and engagement in the face of shifting global tides.
