President Donald Trump has praised the election of Pope Leo XIV, the first-ever pontiff from the United States, as a moment of national pride.
In a statement shared via his Truth Social platform on Thursday, Trump congratulated Cardinal Robert Francis Prevost, who was elected as the new head of the Roman Catholic Church.
“Congratulations to Cardinal Robert Francis Prevost, who was just named Pope. It is such an honor to realize that he is the first American Pope. What excitement, and what a Great Honor for our Country,” Trump wrote.
He added, “I look forward to meeting Pope Leo XIV. It will be a very meaningful moment!”

Pope Leo XIV, born Robert Francis Prevost on September 14, 1955, in Chicago, Illinois, is the first American to ascend to the papacy.
A member of the Order of St. Augustine, he has had a distinguished career in the Church, including serving as a missionary in Peru, Archbishop of Chiclayo, and Prefect of the Dicastery for Bishops.
He was created a cardinal by Pope Francis in 2023.
Upon his election, Pope Leo XIV addressed the faithful gathered in St. Peter’s Square, expressing gratitude for the trust placed in him.
He emphasized his commitment to continuing the legacy of his predecessor, Pope Francis, focusing on themes of peace, inclusivity, and social justice. His inaugural remarks highlighted the importance of unity and compassion in addressing global challenges.
