Chinese authorities have escalated their war against foreign digital platforms by implementing a comprehensive ban on OnlyFans, shutting down all remaining access points to the UK-based adult content subscription service. The move, announced July 21 by the Cyberspace Administration of China, represents Beijing’s strongest action yet against what state media calls “spiritual pollution from the West.”
The ban extends beyond simple domain blocking. Internet service providers have been instructed to deploy advanced deep packet inspection technology to identify and block OnlyFans traffic, freeze financial transactions linked to the platform, monitor domestic payment processors for suspicious activity, and increase penalties for VPN providers facilitating access.
This multi-layered approach effectively seals what was already a heavily restricted platform, closing loopholes that previously allowed limited access through virtual private networks, proxy servers, third-party payment processors, and overseas bank transfers.
The prohibition carries significant financial consequences. An estimated 5,000 to 8,000 Chinese creators are expected to lose their primary income source. Top earners who previously made between 3,000 and 10,000 dollars monthly now face abrupt account termination. Alternative domestic platforms exist but offer revenue potential that is 70 to 90 percent lower. For users, more than 120,000 paid subscribers will lose access. An underground market for content is expected to emerge on encrypted apps, while financial transactions tied to adult content will likely face heightened surveillance.
This crackdown follows an increasingly assertive pattern in China’s internet governance. After a 2017 clampdown on VPNs, the state went on to impose strict protections for minors in online gaming in 2021. In 2023 it launched the Clean Net initiative, followed by a series of social media purification campaigns in 2024. Industry analysts believe these measures are poised to intensify, with even stricter enforcement of platform bans, new legislation aimed at content encryption, expanded deployment of AI monitoring tools, and harsher penalties for attempts to circumvent censorship.
The global context adds further weight. Other countries are also tightening their grip on adult content platforms. Russia has long maintained similar restrictions. Indonesia recently imposed a block. In the United States, lawmakers are in the middle of heated debates over age verification laws and regulatory oversight.
