Guinea’s Transitional Leader, Col. Mamady Doumbouya, has called on the constitutional review committee to create a robust new supreme law that takes into consideration, the “needs and realities” of the country.
Making the call during the constitutional review symposium in the capital, Conakry on Tuesday, Col. Doumbouya emphasized the importance of creating a strong constitution that can bring about long-lasting tranquillity to the country.
According to the privately-owned Africaguinee website, the junta leader also cautioned the committee against creating a constitution that is simply a “copy and paste or tailor-made” version for the country, as this would not serve the needs of the people of Guinea.
He further stated that the National Transitional Committee is committed to drafting a new constitution that will stand the test of time and not merely cater to the interests of the interim authorities.
However, opposition groups and civil society have called for protests, demanding the resignation of the transitional government.
Despite this, the junta leader has pledged to hand over power to civilian authorities at the end of the two-year transition period, which began in January.
