Gunmen on Wednesday attacked the convoy of Atiku Abubakar, the presidential candidate of Nigeria’s main opposition party, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), in Maiduguri, Borno State.
People were seen in a viral video seen on social media, running in different directions as gunshots filled the air.
The ugly incident happened just as the presidential campaign team of the PDP landed the state, which is controlled by the ruling party- the All Progressives Congress (APC).
Vandalised vehicles in the convoy of Atiku was seen at Ramat Square in Maiduguri, the state capital, Daily Trust reported.
Senator Dino Malaye, Spokesman of the Atiku Campaign team blamed the attack on the ruling party in Borno, claiming that more than 70 people were hospitalised.
“They wanted to prevent us from doing holding the campaign, as we speak, 74 people were injured and hospitalised.
“Several vehicles were vandalised by APC thugs,” he said.
