As autumn sets in, Morocco is gearing up for a bustling tourist season after recording a historic influx of visitors this year.
According to the country’s Ministry of Tourism, Morocco welcomed 15 million tourists by the end of September, marking a 14% increase compared to the same period in 2024, a milestone that underscores Morocco’s growing global appeal.
“This period is considered one of the most important tourist seasons in Morocco,” said Abdellah Ansikene, manager of Riad Aicha in Marrakech, whose seven rooms are “fully booked,” he added.
Marrakech, home to more than 1,500 traditional riads, with many located in the city’s historic Medina, remains a magnet for visitors. These riads, with their architectural charm and cultural allure, have revitalized the local economy while supporting artisans and hospitality workers. Earlier in April this year, the city hosted the third edition of the African Heritage Awards – a prestigious celebration of African excellence, drawing Awardees and attendees from all over Africa, and the globe.
“Everyone’s really friendly, it feels really safe and the food is amazing. We’re really lucky to be here,” said tourist Christina Boon.
According to the Moroccan Tourist Office, Marrakech alone accounts for over 35% of national tourism activity, with nearly 10 million overnight stays annually.
Tourism expert Zoubir Bouhoute noted that Morocco, particularly Marrakech, has been investing heavily in new infrastructure to attract higher-end travelers. “Morocco in general, and Marrakech in particular, have started developing infrastructure that caters to new segments of tourists seeking upscale experiences like luxury hotels and fine dining restaurants for visitors with higher incomes,” he said.
To further boost the sector, the Tourism Ministry this week unveiled a $75 million plan to expand tourism in Ouarzazate, famously known as the gateway to the Sahara Desert.
With mild autumn weather, renewed investment, and record-breaking visitor numbers, Morocco’s tourism industry is poised for another exceptional season, solidifying its position as one of Africa’s top travel destinations.
