Bayelsa State Governor, Senator Douye Diri, has reaffirmed his administration’s unwavering dedication to empowering the youth through robust sports development initiatives.
Speaking at the prestigious Samson Siasia Sports Complex on Thursday, shortly after the weekly Prosperity Walk, Governor Diri emphasized the critical importance of providing state-of-the-art facilities to equip Bayelsa’s athletes for success.
His remarks were made in the wake of an impressive achievement, as three exceptional players from this year’s scouting tournament have received coveted invitations for trails from European football clubs. This milestone underscores the effectiveness of the Prosperity Cup, a flagship program championed by Governor Diri’s administration.
Governor Diri congratulated the Director General of the Prosperity Cup, Mr. Ono Akpe, and his team on this outstanding feat, acknowledging their tireless efforts in nurturing talents and fostering a vibrant sports culture in Bayelsa State. The sports subsector, predominantly driven by private initiatives, has received significant support from the government.
“Youth empowerment remains a cornerstone of our administration’s vision,” Governor Diri stated. “We recognize the transformative power of sports in shaping the lives of our young people, promoting healthy lifestyles, and unlocking their potential for excellence.”
Mr. Ono Akpe, Director General of the Prosperity Cup, expressed gratitude to Governor Diri for his unwavering support.

The Prosperity Cup has created a platform for our talented youths to showcase their skills, and we’re thrilled to see them receive international recognition. We’ll continue to work tirelessly to discover and nurture more talents, empowering them to become ambassadors of Bayelsa State.” Akpe said.
Akpe further revealed that the invited players would undergo training and trials with top European clubs, potentially paving the way for professional contracts.
