Nigeria’s Foreign Minister Yusuf Tuggar Resigns to Pursue Bauchi Governorship Bid

By Ebi Kesiena

Nigeria’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Yusuf Tuggar, has resigned from his position as he prepares to contest the governorship of Bauchi State.

Resignation Confirmed

The development was confirmed on Monday in a brief statement issued by the ministry’s spokesperson, Kimiebi Ebienfa.

He said, “The resignation of the Honourable Minister of Foreign Affairs is confirmed.”

Ministers Stepping Down for Political Ambitions

Tuggar is reportedly among several ministers serving under President Bola Ahmed Tinubu who are expected to step down from their roles to pursue political ambitions ahead of forthcoming elections.

Tuggar’s Governorship Aspiration

Earlier, the minister’s Special Adviser on Media and Communications Strategy, Alkasim Abdulkadir, had publicly disclosed Tuggar’s intention to join the Bauchi governorship race.

Abdulkadir said, “The minister is interested and aspires to run for the governorship seat of Bauchi State.”

Compliance with INEC Guidelines

Addressing concerns over the timing of the resignation, he noted that the decision aligns with the electoral guidelines issued by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).

Responding to questions, he added, “There is a timetable released by INEC that stipulates all the rules and regulations for running; he (Tuggar) will adhere to this.”

Tuggar’s Background

Tuggar, a native of Udubo in Gamawa Local Government Area of Bauchi State, previously contested for the governorship seat and is now set to make another bid following his exit from the federal cabinet.
