The United States has announced the transfer of routine visa processing services from its Embassy in Abuja to the U.S. Consulate General in Lagos, effective August 1, 2026.

The U.S. Mission in Nigeria disclosed this in a statement on Friday, saying the development is part of a broader restructuring of visa operations across Africa.

Under the new arrangement, Nigerian citizens and residents seeking routine U.S. visas will be required to schedule their appointments, pay applicable visa fees and complete the application process at the U.S. Consulate General in Lagos.

“Effective August 1, 2026, several U.S. Embassies and Consulates in Africa will no longer be offering routine visa services, including U.S. Embassy Abuja,” the mission stated.

It added that applicants in Nigeria wishing to obtain U.S. visas “must schedule an appointment and pay the required visa fee at U.S. Consulate Lagos, the new designated location.”

According to the U.S. Department of State, the restructuring is designed to strengthen national security by standardising screening, vetting and adjudication procedures while improving operational efficiency and aligning consular activities with evolving U.S. immigration policy priorities.

The U.S. Mission said the consolidation of visa services into regional hubs is a longstanding practice intended to promote consistency in visa processing and make better use of available resources.

It stressed that the changes were not intended to reduce access to visa services for eligible applicants, but would mean that all routine visa applications from Nigeria would henceforth be processed in Lagos.

The development follows the State Department’s June 2026 announcement that Lagos was among 20 African cities selected to retain full routine U.S. visa processing services as part of a major reorganisation of consular operations across the continent.

Under the restructuring, the number of African embassies and consulates providing routine visa services is being reduced from nearly 50 to 20 designated processing hubs.

The hubs are located in Abidjan, Accra, Addis Ababa, Cape Town, Dakar, Dar es Salaam, Djibouti, Johannesburg, Kampala, Kigali, Kinshasa, Lagos, Lomé, Luanda, Malabo, Monrovia, Nairobi, Port Louis, Praia and Yaoundé.

The State Department said missions outside the designated hubs would continue to provide services to American citizens, emergency assistance and selected diplomatic functions.

Meanwhile, the United States is constructing a new consulate campus in Eko Atlantic City, Lagos, as part of efforts to expand visa processing capacity and modernise its consular operations in Nigeria.
