FC Porto continued their impressive run of form in the Champions League this season, after they dumped out Juventus to set up a quarter-final berth next month.
Sérgio Conceição’s men overcame Juve on away goals having won the first leg for the first time since triumphing in the competition in 2003-04 under Mourinho.
The Portuguese giants progressed on the back of Sergio Olivera’s free kick in extra-time after going down to 10 men due to a silly second-half red card and despite losing 3-2 at Turin.
Federico Chiesa’s two goals had given Juventus hope but, that disappeared into thin air after 120 minutes of play.
Porto had failed to take advantage of a first-leg knockout victory since 2003-04 against Lyon in the quarter-final when they put away an opponent featuring future Chelsea signings Michael Essien and Florent Malouda by following a 2-0 win with a second-leg draw.
Mourinho’s side that year went on to defeat Monaco in the final having pulled off one of the biggest upset in the history of European football.
Porto’s lineup on Tuesday was the second-oldest in their Champions League history (29 years and 16 days), behind only their match with Barcelona in March 2000.
Centre-back Pepe, 38, proved an instrumental part of their triumph, clearing several scoring opportunities.
Juventus on the other hand, failed to advance to the last eight for a second straight season having lost out to Lyon in the previous season.
Saddened by the turn of events, Chiesa said: “There’s great disappointment and sadness, I’m pretty much speechless,” Chiesa said. “We managed to get back into the match and we deserved to go through. Instead, we’re here talking about something else and I really don’t know what to say.
“We had all the cards in our hand to go through, just we didn’t show it. We only performed in the second half today and we almost did it … the disappointment is so great. It’s all pretty much meaningless, even my two goals or my performance, because we haven’t got anything out of it.”
