Director-General World Health Organisation, WHO, Tedros Ghebreyesus has said the world still had a long way to go in ending the COVID-19 pandemic, as more cases are being recorded on a daily basis.

This was even as the WHO DG expressed optimism that the disease could be managed through vaccinations and hygienic precautions around the world.

Addressing the public, Ghebreyesus said, “this disease is not a flu, young people have died and we still don’t know the long term consequences for those who survived.

“This pandemic is a long way from over but we have many reasons for optimism. The decline in cases and death in the first few months of the year shows that this variant can be stopped with concerted efforts to apply public health methods alongside vaccination we can bring this pandemic under control in a matter of months”.

4.4 million Covid-19 infections had been recorded across the world last week globally, according to WHO’s technical lead for coronavirus response Maria van Kerkhove.
