Robert Lewandowski was treated to a guard of honour by staff and players of Bayern Munich after the striker matched Gerd Muller’s 49-year-old German league goal record in 2-2 draw at Freiburg on Saturday.
The Polish scored a 26th minute penalty to take his tally for the season to 40 goals to equal the record set by the legendary Muller in 1071/72 season.
The Bundesliga champions marked the event with a guard of honour at the side of the pitch, with Lewandowski jogging through as his team-mates applauded and clapped him on the back.
The 31-year-old holds the record as the second on the all-time Bundesliga goalscorers list with 276 goals, 89 behind Muller’s record of 365.

Having played a starring role in Bayern’s treble-winning 2019/20 season, Lewandowski was named Fifa Best Men’s Player for 2020 in December ahead of Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo.
His injury seemed to have affected Bayern’s chase of a second Champions League trophy in a row as they went out of the competition losing to PSG,
Meanwhile, the Bavarians will be back in the hunt next season with Julian Nagelsmann, currently at RB Leipzig, coming in as the new head coach to help them to a 10th straight Bundesliga title.
