Nigeria’s National Broadcast Commission (NBC) on Monday asked all broadcast media houses in the country to stop tweeting, following a government ban on the social media app.
The Commission also asked the media houses in the country to deactivate their handles, as they attempt a total clamp down on the operation of the social media.
Recall, the Nigerian government had over the weekend placed an indefinite suspension on the social media app days after Nigeria’s President Muhammadu Buhari’s tweet was deleted.
Although the government claims the suspension was made following concerns of tensions, fake news, many diplomatic missions had condemned the move by the Nigerian government.
The Nigerian Federal Government would today have a meeting with the heads of diplomatic missions accredited to Nigeria following statements over the recent ban by the Nigerian Government.
A statement by the Foreign Affairs department of the nation reads, “I am directed to inform that following the recent ban on Twitter by the Federal Government and Press Statement issued by some Heads of Diplomatic Missions Accredited to Nigeria on the subject matter, the Honourable Minister of Foreign Affairs, His Excellency, Geoffrey Onyeama has invited the affected Ambassadors to a Meeting today at 12noon.”
