The Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) has explained that the removal of the recently launched eNaira platform from Google Play Store, was to help the apex bank upgrade the app’s functionalities.

The eNaira which has two applications (eNaira speed wallet and eNaira speed merchant wallet) has elicited negative reviews since its release, especially from Nigerians who were disappointed with the frustrating registration process of the platform.

Reacting to the development, CBN Spokesperson, Osita Nwanisobi, told TheCable that “there is an upgrade going on and I guess it’s ok now”.

The CBN also warned users that it will not be held liable for any loss, whether arising from, or in connection with the use of the eNaira website.

“In no event will the CBN or its directors, officers, employees, independent contractors, affiliates or agents, or any of its or their respective service providers, be liable to you or any third party for any use, interruption, delay or inability to use the eNaira website.

“Lost revenues or profits, delays, interruption or loss of services, business or goodwill, loss or corruption of data, loss resulting from system or system service failure, malfunction or shutdown, failure to accurately transfer, read or transmit information, failure to update or provide correct information, system incompatibility or provision of incorrect compatibility information or breaches in system security, or for any consequential, incidental, indirect, exemplary, special or punitive damages, whether arising out of or in connection with the use of the eNaira website,” a statement on the eNaira website read.

According to Google Play, an app can be removed from its store for violating policies, one of such policies which is minimum functionality.

“At a minimum, apps should provide users with a basic degree of functionality and a respectful user experience. Apps that crash, exhibit other behaviours that are not consistent with a functional user experience are not allowed on Google Play,” the Google Play policy reads.

Meanwhile, the version of the mobile application for merchants, which is called ‘eNaira Speed Merchant Wallet’, is still available for download. The app, which has over 10,000 downloads, also has its bad reviews.
