The Police Service Commission, PSC says it will be insensitive of the commission to dismiss any police officer who has failed to resume work following the losses suffered by the force in #EndSARS violence.
This was contained in a statement issued by the Head, Press and Public Relations, PSC, Ikechukwu Ani, in reaction to reports that the commission threatened to sack police officers who failed to return to work in the aftermath of #EndSARS violence across the country.
Debunking the reports, the PSC said the commission has never threatened to sack policemen who have refused to get back to work, adding that it condemns the killings of police officers who were on legitimate duties during #EndSARS violence.
“The Police Service Commission wishes to state that it did not any time say Policemen who refused to get back to work will be dismissed.
“The Commission had condemned the killing of Police officers on legitimate duties and had warned that any attempt to make the country lawless will be an ill-wind that will blow no body any good.
The PSC which stressed that it “can only plead with the officers to resume work, while Government works out enough protective programmes for them,” added that any form of threats to their job would be incentive during this period.
“It will be very insensitive at this point for anyone to say that the Commission will dismiss any policeman who didn’t return to work.
“The Commission is even at present mourning the deaths of its gallant officers who were killed in the crisis,” it said.
It is worthwhile to note that men of the Nigerian police force are yet to return to the streets in spite of the directive by the Inspector-General of Police to policemen.
Most of the policemen are avoiding appearing in public, claiming that they can no longer walk freely as their lives and those of their families are being threatened by hoodlums who pretended to be #EndSARS protesters.
