Former Super Eagles Captain, Kanu Nwankwo, has explained his reasons for participating in the activities lined up to celebrate the 70th birthday of the National Leader of the All Progressives Congress, Bola Tinubu.
Kanu and other former players’ received backlash from Nigerians for visiting Tinubu, who is known to be nursing a presidential ambition.
Addressing the concerns, Kanu said, “People are talking, please pay attention. I’m not a politician, I’m a footballer and a proud one. I’m a legend. I know what is good and what is not good. 22 years ago, Kanu Heart Foundation was looking for people to help us. We got only three governors. Ahmed Tinubu was one of them. He gave the Foundation money to start up. He supported us. And now, it’s his 70th birthday. Why not, we also have to come and support him.”
The Ex-Arsenal star took part in a novelty match between ex-Super Eagles players and Team Lagos to mark the occasion of Tinubu’s birthday celebration.
Former Super Eagles Striker, Victor Agali scored two goals for the ex-international team led by Austin Jay Jay Okocha to defeat the Team Lagos, which was made up of former players of Stationery Stores and other clubs in Lagos State.
Agali scored the first goal 10 minutes into the second half from a brilliant pass from Julius Aghahowa and went on to net the second goal 12 minutes later through his head from a cross by Austin Okocha, who displayed brilliant and dribbling skills during the match.
Other ex-internationals who took part in the novelty game include; Peter Rufai, Ike Shorunmu, Taribo West, Garba Lawal, Mutiu Adepoju, Victor Ikpeba and Abiodun Obafemi, among others.
