Chelsea Football Club fans are set to display banner in appreciation of legend John Obi Mikel when they host Brentford in the Premier League on Saturday afternoon.
The former Super Eagles midfielder would be honoured by unveiling a special banner with an inscription (Taking the Mikel) at the Matthew Harding Stand five years after leaving the West London side.
Mikel Obi who was a key member of the Chelsea squad during the start of their dominance in English football from 2006-2017, and will be appreciated for his role during his time at the club.
He also helped the club secure their first-ever Champions League title in Germany against Bayern Munich at the Allianz Arena in 2012.
The banner design featured ‘Taking The Mikel’ with a Champions League trophy.
Mikel joined Chelsea in a controversial transfer from Lyn Oslo in 2006, having previously agreed to join Man United. He went on to play for the Blues for 11 years, scoring six goals, 13 assists in 372 appearances across all competitions.
The 34-year-old won two Premier League titles, four FA Cups, two League Cups, one UEFA Europa League, and the Champions League title during his time at Chelsea.
He left Chelsea in January 2017 to sign for Chinese Super League side Tianjin Teda
The two-time Chelsea young player of the year is currently without a club after his contract was terminated by Al Kuwait SC in November last year, just after four months of joining the club where he played only five games.
Chelsea are currently in third place with 59 points in the league standings, five points above fourth place Arsenal after 28 games.
