Few days after the Nigerian Government withdrew recognition of the League Management Company (LMC), the body responsible for administering the country’s apex domestic league affairs – the Nigeria Professional Football League (NPFL), Police operatives on Thursday September 15, 2022, sealed its headquarters.
The head office is located in Abuja, Nigeria’s capital.
Heritage Times HT gathered that the police personnel arrived at the office in trucks on the orders of a government agency known as Bureau of Public Enterprise.
Our Correspondent sighted up to 15 Policemen fully armed in front of the LMC office on Thursday morning.
A senior Government official and the Permanent Secretary of the Federal Ministry of Youth and Sports Development, Ismaila Abubakar, had last Friday September 9 announced the withdrawal of the government’s recognition of the LMC.
He had explained that the decision was taken in view of the several unpleasant incidents regarding the management of the football league.
The Government also directed the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) to set up an Interim Management Committee (IMC) to run the league pending the time the clubs will run it themselves.
The league currently on break after completion of last season, was earlier scheduled to resume for 2022/23 football season latest by October 2022, but with the latest development, it remains to be seen when football activities will kick-start for the new season.
