World record holder and Nigerian sprint sensation Tobi Amusan has been listed among the top 10 nominees for the Women’s World Athlete of the Year by the World Athletics.
The athletics governing body released the list of nominees on their website on Wednesday.
According to the world athletics body, the nominees were selected by an international panel of athletics experts, comprising representatives from all six continental areas of World Athletics.
Amusan had a spectacular 2022 season, breaking the women’s 100m hurdles world record on her way to winning the world title at 12.12secs.
She also broke the Commonwealth Games record, while also claiming gold.
A three-way voting process will determine the five finalists on October 31.
Amusan is the first Nigerian athlete in history, to be nominated for the Athlete of the Year Award by World Athletics.
Other Shortlisted Nominees
Also nominated are Jamaica’s Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce who ran sub 10.70s seven times in the season in the women’s 100m, compatriot Shericka Jackson, USA’s Sydney McLaughlin who broke the World Record in the women 400m hurdles and Venezuela’s Yulimar Rojas who improved her women’s triple jump world record.
Kenya’s Faith Kipyegon, Bahamas’ Shaunae Miller-Uibo, Ukraine’s Yaroslava Mahuchikh, Peru’s Kimberly Garcia and USA’s Chase Ealey are the other nominees.
