The decision, according to Chelsea management, is to raise money to fund the completion of a school that the late Christian Atsu was building in Ghana.

Atsu played for both Chelsea and Everton during his career.

He was a member of Chelsea for five years, but he never played for their first team before moving to Everton.

The match between the two former clubs of Atsu took place on Saturday March 18 in the Premier League, with the game ending in a 2-2 draw at Stamford Bridge.

According to a statement from Chelsea, “money raised will also be going to Arms Around the Child, a charity for which Christian was an ambassador, and it will fund the completion of the school they had started building in his native Ghana,” the club announced.

“The auction, which includes signed shirts from all the squad as well as a variety of items from club legends, will run until 2pm on 8 April.”

On Saturday, February 18, 2023, Atsu was declared dead after rescue workers found his lifeless body amidst the debris caused by the recent earthquake that struck Turkey.

The search for him had lasted several days since the disaster hit Turkey and Syria in mid-February.

Atsu, the former winger for Chelsea and Newcastle United, was finally laid to rest on Friday, March 17, 2022, in his hometown of Ada.
