ASUU President, Professor Biodun Ogunyemi, who led other National Executive Committee of the union to the event where he made the announcement, explained that the suspension takes effect from today, Thursday 24th, 2020.

“The Academic Staff Union of University (ASUU) on Wednesday “conditionally” suspended its strike, ending a protracted industrial action that started since March 2020. He said the suspension of the strike takes effect from Thursday, December 24th, 2020.

“The agreement was reached on the early hours on Wednesday morning after eight-hour close-door meeting of negotiations between both parties.

” ASUU expresses joy on how the Federal Government handled the negotiation process and that they will be having their own executive meeting to conclude and gets back to the Government within 24hrs,” ASUU said on social media.

Ogunyemi however warned, that the union would return to strike without notice if the government fails in meeting its part of the agreement reached with the university lecturers.

Though, the Minister of Labour and Employment, Chris Ngige, had on Tuesday disclosed that the government has already met 98% of the demands of the ASUU leadership.

Concerning when schools will be reopened,  ASUU chairman stated that the decision lies with the federal government and the senate considering the COVID-19 pandemic.
