The visit comes at a time Russia and Western powers are vying for African support, notably in the aftermath of the Ukraine invasion.

Mr. Kiir touched down in the Russian capital on Wednesday and received a warm welcome from Deputy Foreign Minister Andrey Rudenko Yurevich, as confirmed by the president’s press unit.

The President’s office has outlined that the meeting scheduled for Thursday with President Putin will encompass a broad spectrum of topics.

The discussions will focus on fostering bilateral relations across diverse sectors, alongside addressing regional and global matters of significance.

Furthermore, the visit aims to bolster diplomatic ties and explore opportunities for collaboration in the realms of trade, investment, and security. It underscores a commitment to enhancing mutual cooperation.

Also on the agenda is the crucial matter of lifting an arms embargo and targeted sanctions that have been imposed on specific individuals in South Sudan.

The goal is to navigate through these restrictions and seek potential resolutions.

It is pertinent to mention that in May, Russia refrained from casting a vote in favour of renewing sanctions on South Sudan in the UN Security Council.

The sanctions encompass asset freezes, travel bans, and an arms embargo.
