National Democratic Congress (NDC) flagbearer, John Dramani Mahama, has described the current economic crisis as the worst in Ghana’s history.
Addressing a durbar of chiefs and people at Zebilla in the Upper East Region, he said the country needs an urgent reset to get the economy back on track.
Reflecting on his tenure, Mahama acknowledged that while the economic conditions during his presidency were challenging, they were still manageable, and the country made notable progress.
He stated that experienced leadership is crucial for achieving a swift and effective turnaround.
Mahama is currently in the first phase of his 2024 election campaign tour in the Upper East Region.
According to Myjoyonline.com, he attributed the economic crisis to the government’s excessive borrowing and financial mismanagement, which have severely devalued the cedi.
He pointed out that the national debt has escalated dramatically from GH₵120 billion in 2017 to GH₵750 billion in 2024. This debt surge has forced the government to implement stringent austerity measures, including a debt restructuring program, which has adversely impacted all sectors of society, particularly the most vulnerable populations.
While Mahama assured the attendees at the durbar that his administration would prioritize economic recovery and job creation for the youth, he highlighted his 24-hour economic policy, designed to tackle the country’s production deficits and high unemployment rates.
He therefore called on Ghanaians to support the NDC and his candidacy in the upcoming 2024 elections, promising a commitment to restoring the economy and improving the livelihoods of all citizens.
