Manchester City extended their lead on the summit of Premier League table as goals from Gabriel Jesus and Raheem Sterling saw off Burnley at Turf Moor on Wednesday.
It was City’s 13th-successive Premier League win having got off to a stuttering start this season, which saw them lingering at mid-table before Christmas.
During the period, Pep Guardiola conceded that his side’s ambitions were limited to Europa League football owing to their poor run of form, but urged his stars to remain focused.
“We have to do our job. It’s a big mistake to think about other sides,” the Spaniard told BBC Sport after Wednesday’s win. “When we were 12th we were thinking “forget about the Premier League, [see] if we can achieve being in Europa League next season.”
“It’s not about runs of games, statistics. It’s always the next game, next game. For now we enjoy this game, and tomorrow we will start to think about the next game.”
Manchester City will next travel to Anfield to face Liverpool, who aren’t looking their best this season. But, Guardiola has insisted that the clash at Merseyside will come off as every other game holds the same from now and to the end of the season.
“It is for the same (number of) points. Of course (Liverpool) are a contender at the end to be champions, but it is for three points like today,” he added.
“We have won six games in a row against teams in lower positions in the table. We know exactly how tough it was to win with many of these clubs. We had to do our best.
“Now come different teams, different types of play. Liverpool, Tottenham, Everton, West Ham, the Champions League, United. It’s another tough group of games.
“Today we enjoy this game and then tomorrow we think about Liverpool.”
