The Nigerian Government has firmly denied allegations made in a viral video by Niger Republic’s military leader, General Abdourahamane Tchiani, accusing Nigeria of colluding with France to destabilise his country.
In a statement issued on Thursday, Nigeria’s Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, described it as baseless and fictitious.
Idris emphasised Nigeria’s unwavering commitment to fostering regional stability and addressing terrorism and transnational challenges, as he urged Niger to prioritise constructive dialogue over unfounded accusations.
“These claims exist solely in the realm of imagination,” the statement read. “Nigeria has never engaged in any covert or overt alliance with France—or any other nation—to sponsor terrorism or destabilise Niger Republic following its recent political upheaval.”
As Chairman of ECOWAS, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has consistently promoted diplomatic engagement with Niger. The Nigerian government remains dedicated to peace, regional harmony, and strengthening historic ties with its neighbour.
“Nigeria’s Armed Forces, alongside partners in the Multinational Joint Task Force, are actively curbing terrorism in the region. The suggestion that Nigeria would conspire with any foreign power to undermine Niger’s peace and security is absurd,” Idris added.
The Minister categorically denied accusations of Nigeria arming terror groups or ceding parts of its territory for subversive activities. He reiterated Nigeria’s commitment to sovereignty and territorial integrity, highlighting that no foreign military bases operate within Nigerian borders.
Idris dismissed allegations of sabotage targeting Niger’s pipelines and agriculture as illogical and counterproductive. He pointed to joint infrastructure projects such as the Trans-Saharan Gas Pipeline and the Kano-Maradi Railway as evidence of Nigeria’s commitment to Niger’s economic growth.
Counterterrorism Efforts
Addressing claims of a so-called Lakurawa terrorist headquarters in Sokoto State, Idris reaffirmed Nigeria’s leadership in regional counterterrorism initiatives. He noted the recent launch of Operation Forest Sanity III, aimed specifically at dismantling threats like the alleged Lakurawa network.
“Nigeria has sacrificed significant resources and lives to ensure stability in the Lake Chad Basin and beyond. These false accusations undermine the collective efforts needed to address regional security challenges,” Idris maintained.
The Nigerian government said it remains resolute in promoting peace, security, and cooperation in the ECOWAS region while dismissing attempts to sow discord through unfounded claims.
