Equatorial Guinea completed the quarterfinals slot at the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) after defeating Mali 6-5 on penalties in a pulsating round of 16 clash on Wednesday.
The Malian team had entered the encounter as the overwhelming favourite, but the National Thunder did what they knew how to do best – giant slaying – as their fairytale run continued after goalless draw with the Eagles.
Jesus Owono had saved a decisive spot-kick from Falaye Sacko to break Malian hearts and reward Equatorial Guinea (114th in the FIFA rankings) with a tie against Senegal in the last eight.
The quarterfinal matches will run from Saturday, 29 to Sunday 30, January 2021.
