In order to assist Haiti in addressing its political, economic, and security crisis, Canada and the United States have deployed “security equipment,” including tactical and armored vehicles.
According to a joint statement issued on Saturday, “This equipment will support the HNP [Haitian National Police] in their fight against criminal actors who are inciting violence and obstructing the flow of critically needed humanitarian assistance, thereby impeding efforts to stop the spread of cholera.”
The security apparatus arrived as political unrest and a gang alliance obstructing the provision of diesel and gasoline are plaguing Haiti, the poorest country in the Americas. The majority of transportation has been stopped, and looting and gang shootouts are becoming more frequent.
