Rivers State Governor, Ezenwo Nyesom Wike has called on Nigerians to protest against President Muhammadu Buhari’s decision to appoint his media aide, Lauretta Onochie as INEC Commissioner.
The Governor made the call while addressing #EndSARS protesters in Port Harcourt, the state’s capital on Tuesday.
According to him, Nigerians must set their priorities straight by protesting against issues that matter particularly President Buhari’s decision to appoint his own aide as the commissioner for an Independent body.
“Nigeria we must choose our priority, you have heard what happened today, that the president has appointed his media aide as national commissioner of INEC, and you are saying INEC should be independent, how will INEC be independent when the President has appointed his own aide as the commissioner?” he quizzed.
Governor Wike therefore urged Nigerians to protest against the President’s “unpopular decision” even as they canvass for police reform
“As we are protesting the police reform, we will also protest against Mr President, he cannot bring his media aide as commissioner of INEC.”
The Heritage Times had earlier reported that President Buhari appointed his Special Assistant on Social Media, Lauretta Onochie, and three others as national commissioners of Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).
Others are: Prof. Mohammed Sani (Katsina), Prof. Kunle Ajayi (Ekiti) and Seidu Ahmed (Jigawa).
