The Ghana Police Service has paid tribute to 20 officers who lost their lives in the line of duty this year, reaffirming the nation’s gratitude for their sacrifice and service.
The 2025 Police Memorial Ceremony, held on Wednesday at the National Police Training School in Tesano, Accra, provided a solemn moment of reflection as the Service honoured personnel who died while protecting lives and safeguarding national security.
The ceremony opened with a somber roll call of the fallen officers, their names echoing through the assembly ground as a mark of respect and remembrance.
According to the Police Service, six of the deceased officers received the highest posthumous recognition with their names engraved on the Police Wall of Honour, a monument dedicated to officers who are killed in active service. The remaining fourteen officers were entered into the Memorial Book of Honour, a record reserved for personnel who pass away while carrying out official duties.
Police Memorial Day, observed annually, serves as a national moment to acknowledge the courage, dedication, and ultimate sacrifice of officers who die in the course of duty. Since its introduction in 2014, the commemoration has highlighted the critical role of law enforcement in maintaining public safety, both within Ghana and on international peacekeeping missions.
This year’s ceremony featured a flag-raising and wreath-laying segment that brought together key government officials, security leaders, and families of the deceased.
President John Mahama led the tributes, joining the Inspector General of Police, Christian Tetteh Yohuno, and the Minister for the Interior, Muntaka Mohammed-Mubarak, in honouring the fallen heroes. Representatives of bereaved families were also present, receiving assurance that the contributions of their loved ones would remain etched in national memory.
Meanwhile, the Ghana Police Service emphasized that the annual observance is not merely ceremonial but reflects the institution’s commitment to recognising bravery, supporting affected families, and strengthening its resolve to safeguard the nation in the face of emerging security challenges.
