Manchester United have relieved head coach Ruben Amorim of his duties, the club confirmed on Monday, bringing an abrupt end to the Portuguese manager’s tenure at Old Trafford.
Amorim, who was appointed in November 2024, was dismissed amid mounting dissatisfaction over the team’s performances and growing internal tensions. His exit comes less than 24 hours after he publicly criticised the club’s hierarchy during a post-match press conference following a 1–1 Premier League draw with Leeds United.
At the time of his dismissal, United were sixth in the league table. Sources close to the club indicated that Amorim’s remarks about his authority and role within the club accelerated the leadership’s decision, prompting swift action from the board less than two seasons into his spell.
In a statement released on the club’s official website, Manchester United said:
“Ruben Amorim has departed his role as Head Coach of Manchester United. Ruben was appointed in November 2024 and led the team to a UEFA Europa League final in Bilbao in May.
“With Manchester United sitting sixth in the Premier League, the club’s leadership has reluctantly made the decision that it is the right time to make a change. This will give the team the best opportunity of achieving the highest possible Premier League finish.
“The club would like to thank Ruben for his contribution and wishes him well for the future”.
The club also confirmed that former United midfielder Darren Fletcher will take charge of the team on an interim basis, starting with Wednesday’s Premier League fixture against Burnley, as preparations begin for the appointment of a permanent replacement.
