Nigeria and the Kingdom of the Netherlands have reaffirmed their commitment to strengthening bilateral relations following a high-level engagement at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Abuja, aimed at deepening strategic cooperation and addressing shared regional and global challenges.
The development was contained in a statement by Kimiebi Ebienfa, spokesperson of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, who disclosed that the Permanent Secretary of the ministry, Ambassador Dunoma Umar Ahmed, received the Sahel Envoy of the Kingdom of the Netherlands, Mr. Robert Zimmerman, alongside members of his delegation for a comprehensive dialogue.
According to the statement, discussions at the meeting reflected on the longstanding diplomatic relationship between Nigeria and the Netherlands, which dates back to 1960. Both parties reviewed existing areas of cooperation and explored new opportunities to expand engagement in sectors critical to sustainable development and regional stability.
Key focus areas highlighted during the talks included trade and investment, energy transition, agriculture, and water management, with both sides agreeing on the need to strengthen economic ties that benefit their respective citizens. Youth empowerment and migration governance also featured prominently, reflecting shared concerns about job creation, skills development, and safe, orderly migration.
The meeting further addressed maritime security in the Gulf of Guinea, counter-terrorism efforts, and broader multilateral cooperation. Both Nigeria and the Netherlands acknowledged the importance of joint action in tackling insecurity, particularly by addressing its root causes through inclusive development and regional collaboration.
Furthermore, Ambassador Ahmed and Mr. Zimmerman reaffirmed their commitment to a partnership built on mutual respect, equality, and shared values. They emphasized people-to-people relations as a vital pillar of diplomacy, noting that cultural exchange, knowledge sharing, and private-sector collaboration are essential for driving innovation and inclusive growth.
The engagement also addressed the importance of cultural diplomacy in strengthening understanding between both nations, as well as the role of educational and technical exchanges in building long-term capacity.
The meeting ended with both sides pledging to sustain dialogue and expand cooperation in support of regional peace, economic diversification, and a rules-based international order. They expressed optimism that a stronger Nigeria–Netherlands partnership would contribute meaningfully to stability in West Africa and to global development efforts.
