Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s Manchester United side ended another season without a single trophy after they were beaten on penalties by Villareal in the Europa League final on Wednesday, The Heritage Times report.
Gerard Moreno saw his first-half effort cancelled out by Edinson Cavani, and the two sides failed to add further goals to the during normal and extra-time.
During United’s epic penalty shootout against Villarreal went on, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer could be seen, a few feet behind his players and staff, pacing his technical area, .
The Norwegian was spotted rubbing his head as the tension continued to rise, penalty after penalty hitting the back of the net in Gdansk.
All 20 outfield players scored from the spot, leaving it to the keepers to decide the contest. Geronimo Rulli stepped up to convert his and went on to deny David de Gea to secure the crown for the Spanish ouftit.
While so much has been said about the need for a first trophy under Solskjaer, and how it could be the catalyst to push United onto bigger and better things, Solksjaer could be shown the exit door after all as the club continue their search of a first silverware in four years.
The 48-year-old, who joined United in 2019 from Norwegian outfit, Molde is yet to win a silverware in his two and half years at the helm and only lost out last night in the closest he has come with the Red Devils.
