A Rwandan athlete, Sirag Rubayita, 34, reportedly lost his life in Kenya following a tragic love triangle fight he had with his Kenyan mate, identified as Dancan Khamala, a sprinter and small business owner.
The fight took place last Thursday in Iten County in Kenya, situated approximately six hours away from the capital Nairobi.
The deceased athlete died on Friday after succumbing from severe injuries resulting from the confrontation.
According to the Coach of both athletes, the disputes rose from the romantic involvement of both athletes and the unidentified Rwandan lady.
“We were informed on Thursday evening that the two athletes fought over a woman. We received the report that the Rwandan athlete was in critical condition and should be admitted to the Intensive Care Unit(ICU).
“The Kenyan Athlete told us he had married the Rwandan woman, adding that the deceased Rubayita was his wife’s ex-boyfriend. The police is investigating,” the Coach said.
The suspect, Khamara was heard in a recorded conversation clarifying that he had been living with the woman for two months.
He further revealed that the Rwandan lady had left her Rwandan athlete boyfriend before eloping with him.
Currently, the Rwandan High Commission to Kenya has moved to the crime scene, Iten County to follow up on the tragedy.
The Rwanda Athletic Federation (RAF) have mourned the late athlete whom they had been expecting to succeed in Athletics.
“Losing such a promising athlete is truly saddening,” said Jean Paul Niyitunze, the RAF’s Secretary General.
According to sources in Kenya, the tragedy marks the third incident involving sportsmen in the Iten county since 2021.
