Sergey Lavrov the Foreign Minister of Russia on Wednesday, met with the President of Angola, Joao Lourenco in the country’s capital, Luanda in another stage of his African tour, where he solicited for the support of the continent in Moscow’s aggression against Ukraine.
Lavrov accused the West of pressuring developing countries to align in favour of Ukraine, urging developing countries to back Russia instead.
The war in Ukraine which started Feb 14 2022, topped agenda, with the Angolan authorities asking Lavrov for an assessment of the situation on ground.
According to the Russian envoy, Western allies are “transforming Ukraine into the stage of an hybrid war” against Russia.
Angola initially, abstained from condemning the Russian invasion at the United Nations general assembly last year.
It however voted in favour of the resolution censuring the annexation of Ukrainian territories in October.
Earlier this month, the Angolan President, Joao Lourenco, appealed to Moscow to declare “a definitive and unconditional ceasefire.”
Russia and Angola are preparing for the second bilateral summit in the history of the two countries, scheduled for April in Luanda.
